SPLIS Webinar:
SPLIS Webinar: Integrating the Array of Technology with the System of Pronunciation: Toward an Agile/Scrum Model
The focus of pronunciation teaching has shifted from imitating and reproducing target-like pronunciation features to applying pronunciation features in students’ spontaneous speech. However, due to the complex and dynamic nature of the pronunciation system, it is often difficult to transfer classroom practice into daily communication. For example, to use sentence stress effectively, learners need to manipulate multiple acoustic features (pitch, duration, intensity, vowel quality) and consider the influence of information structure (new versus given, contrast), syntactical structure, and intonational structure. While technology like speech visualization, automated speech recognition, and high-variability pronunciation training may facilitate pronunciation teaching, how to weave the array of technology organically into a curriculum remains under-addressed. Integrating various technological tools to the system of pronunciation with the Agile/Scrum model, this talk offers a potentially productive model addressing the dynamic nature of pronunciation and focusing on the transferability of classroom-learned knowledge in spontaneous speech.
